About Speaking & Listening

A professional, friendly, independent speech and language therapy service for children — founded in 2014 by Elizabeth Hawkins.

Hello, I'm Lizi

I am a Speech and Language Therapist based in Reading, Berkshire. I set up Speaking & Listening in 2014 in response to an increased need for speech and language therapy which current provision is not always able to meet.

I have over twenty years' experience as a Speech and Language Therapist, including more than ten years working for the NHS, across clinics, mainstream schools, nurseries and specialist settings. I am a member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

“Communication is a vital skill required by everyone and underpins everything we do. Children with communication difficulties struggle to read, learn, make friends, socialise and express their emotions.” Elizabeth Hawkins BSc · HCPC · RCSLT

I strongly believe all children deserve the opportunity to fully develop their communication skills to ensure they achieve their potential. I offer a professional and friendly service, working with parents and education settings to ensure these opportunities are not missed.

My approach

Therapy works best when it doesn't feel like therapy. All assessment and therapy is presented in a fun, non‑threatening way, in a place your child already knows well — usually your home, or their nursery or school.

  • Play‑based, child‑led sessions that keep children motivated
  • Clear, jargon‑free targets agreed with you from the outset
  • Practical strategies you and school staff can use every day
  • Close liaison with NHS therapists and other professionals involved
  • Honest advice — including when therapy isn't needed

Areas I regularly support

  • Attention and listening difficulties
  • Stammering
  • Speech sound difficulties
  • Delayed expressive language
  • Delayed understanding of language
